Walking has become my favourite activity and the best therapy – By Yana – Guarda, Portugal 🇵🇹
I grew up in a place where walking or hiking was not a common activity. People walked to get places, not for the sake of walking itself. Then, while travelling in Norway, I did my first long hike.
Since then, walking has become my favourite activity and the best therapy.
I feel that walking is one of the most basic human activities. It is one of the first things we learn as children. For thousands of years, humans spent a large part of their lives walking in nature, and only in the last centuries have we become so disconnected from this natural habit. We spend a lot of time sitting indoors, disconnected from nature.
While I’m walking, I experience the perfect amount of boredom. I’m not completely bored because there are always surroundings to observe and the curiosity of what might be waiting around the next corner. But there is enough space for my brain to start generating new ideas, engaging in deep reflections, and having an internal dialogue that clears my mind and relaxes me.
When I walk, I feel that I connect with my essence. I’m not distracted by technology, and I feel connected to nature. I breath slower and deeper, I feel more alive.
After each walk, I definitely feel lighter and happier.
